The AVCHD format is a high-definition camcorder video format jointly developed by Panasonic and Sony for use in consumer camcorders. It uses a form of compression to allow large files created by HD video recording to be captured and saved on digital media such as hard disk drives and flash memory cards. For PC users who try to play AVCHD files with Windows Media Player, they often encounter the following problem:
“I have a Sony WX-350; I recorded many videos with it. When opening them on my new Windows 10 laptop with Windows Media Player 12, it will not open files with the extension .mts which is an AVCHD video format. Why is there no Codec installed? Does windows have an approved codec for this?”Windows Media Player 12 supported file formats
After searching for Windows Media Player supported file formats, we find that it only handles MPEG-2 TS Video file with the .m2ts file extension, which is a filename extension used for the Blu-ray Disc Audio-Video (BDAV) MPEG-2 Transport Stream (M2TS) container file format. It is used for multiplexing audio, video and other streams. It is based on the MPEG-2 transport stream container. This container format is commonly used for high definition video on Blu-ray Disc and AVCHD. While the AVCHD format uses the MPEG-4 AVC (MPEG-4 Part 10)/H.264 format compression codec with either .mts or .m2ts file extension.
Obviously, the codec for .mts and .m2ts files for the AVCHD video are missing or deleted from the Windows Media Player supported file list. The most effective solution is using a third-party MTS Converter application to fix the format or codec incompatible issue.Transcode AVCHD MTS/M2TS for Windows Media Player viewing
