Anyone got any ideas on this one ? I know it's not a rod or yank but hay what the hell, it's doing my head in so I thought I'd ask ! I've got a VW T25 1.6 td, if I run it with the oil on the minimum it runs ok till it gets to a point where the oil light flickers going round roundabouts then I top it up again. However if I top it up to the max level the oil light flickers on every corned and if I go round a roundabout to quick the oil light comes on and it starts to run on the engine oil producing big clouds of smoke, horrible noises and am unable to reduce the revs till it's on the strait again and cleared itself ! Anyone got any ideas ?

I'm no expert on VW camper vans, but if we look at it from a Diesel point of view, it sounds like it could be piston rings. Does it do it when turning Left or Right?

Turning right, mainly on roundabouts ! Don't get why the oil light comes on more when full than when low though !

First I wondered if it had the wrong dipstick but now I'm wondering if there is a baffle missing from the sump as the engine is tipped on it's side leaning to the left so presumably the oil is surging up the block when going round roundabouts ?

what grade oil you putting in ,thicken it up with a few tins of wynns, see what happens, sounds a bit terminal, check oil sender, rip sump off, check the easiest and cheapest first, put a gauge on to check oil pressure

I don't think I'd read to much into this, it is possible you've got two seperate problems - low pressure, and the cause of smoke and running on oil. Definitely do what Dazza said and fit an Oil pressure guage. I've fitted brand new pressure light switches in the past which have been faulty which is very frustrating when you've just rebuilt an engine :/ Your baffle theory is a good one. It is possible that the rings are okay, but if there's nothing stopping, or slowing down the oil from moving about in the sump, then that could quite easily flood the bores. Not sure that would make it syphon and run on the oil though.

From another mate
these are quite well known for a faulty oil light according to a mate who deals in them from time to time, same with the petrol ones. It wouldn't seem probable, but could you have the wrong dipstick and a faulty light, so it's being overfilled? Like corvette says, check with a pressure gauge. Also try dropping the oil and filling with the exact amount that the manual says to eliminate the dipstick being a problem. I'd would think though that if it's surging up the bore and burning, it must be getting past the rings, so a compression test is in order.
