Encode H.264 to AIC for iMovie
Summary: Do you have the need of encoding H.264 to AIC for iMovie. This article will tell the difference between H.264 and AIC and give you some tips.
iMovie is a built-in app can help us do some editing work conveniently, the performance in it is very friendly to beginners, its latest version has supported 4K videos. However, iMovie only supports limited codecs. If you have experienced peculiar issues with editing some H.264 codec footages in iMovie, don’t panic, I’ll offer you two solutions of encoding H.264 for iMovie to fix these issues. First things first, we should know that AIC, Apple InterMediate Codec, is iMovie most compatible with. Here I give the features for both H.264 and AIC.
H.264 vs. AIC
H.264 (an MPEG-4 AVC) is an acquisition (camera) and distribution (web streaming) codec. It’s highly compressed, which means that the files are small, and iMovie has to do extra work each time you play your timeline, make an edit, etc.
AIC (Apple InterMediate Codec) is an editing codec. It uses much less compression, which means that the files are big, but iMovie can play it more easily.
OK, in order to edit H.264 codec footage in iMovie with no issue, we’d better encode H.264 to AIC for iMovie. The following paragraph is a free solution I offer you. And it works well.
Squared 5’s MPEG Streamclip
Not only is it extremely easy to encode H.264 footage (see here), but it’s also much cheaper – free!
Next, there is a more powerful software highly recommended for you. It has many more practicable functions than Squared 5’s MPEG Streamclip.
